ParisLemon — What A Difference Six Years Makes...:

When subjected to heat, why do some objects melt while other objects burn?

To answer this question fully let's explain why things melt and why things burn. So let's start with melting.
Melting is what is called a phase transition. That is when a substance changes from solid to liquid to gas. Temperature affects how much the atoms of a substance move, if they are really hot they will be too energetic to hold together at all and be a gas. At lower temperatures, they move less so they can hold together but do not have any solid form, a liquid. At even lower temperatures, they form crystals, solid forms, and become a solid. These changes are caused temperature and pressure. Floating in space, an object is under no pressure, space is a vacuum. However on earth. We on the surface have about 15 pounds of atmosphere pushing down on every square inch of space. Every object's phase transition can be described in a chart like this[1]  . That shows how temperature and pressure affect phase transition, notice how when air pressure is lower, water also boils below 212F/100C.
Burning is a totally different physical property, that describes combustion, and (at least to me) is a little more complicated to explain. This is a property separate from phase transition that describes chemical reactions called combustion. These reactions give off energy in the form of heat or light, and require an oxidizing agent What on earth is that? The most familiar oxidizing agent is oxygen, it makes stuff burn. "Yeah, genius," you say, "but how?" Now we have to delve a little more into chemistry. Most atoms are held together by covalent bonds, atoms share one or more electrons, becoming a new substance, like water plus hydrogen makes water, the hydrogen and oxygen share electrons which bind them into water.
Burning is the result of a chemical reaction where the oxidizing agent accepts electrons, creating new compounds that are smaller than the ones you started with. So when you burn sugar carbon dioxide and water are created. (your body also does the same thing at much lower temperatures, burning sugar to make water and CO2. The heat provides enough physical energy to allow the reaction to occur.
This is how we send rockets into space btw. The rockets have tanks of compressed hydrogen and oxygen, whch have nozzles which meet at the end of the rocket. When you're ready for liftoff, you open the tanks, add a spark, and BOOM. That big trail of gas that comes out of the end? That's water vapor.
So when you strike a match, the friction raises the temperature of the phosphorus in the match head to create an oxidizing reaction, making a flame, since combustion creates heat, this starts to heat the rest of the match, making it burn.
To answer your question water can burn, if you add pure phosphorus, it will combust and make an explosive chemical reaction. Wood can liquify, heat it and it'll burn first, turn to charcoal, heat that enough, and it will liquify. It happens in the earth, plants and animals dead for millions of years, get buried are exposed to tremendous heat and pressure and become raw petroleum.

Important change to Diablo III: we're going to be removing the gold and real-money auction house

We are writing tell you about an important change to Diablo III: we're going to be removing the gold and real-money auction house system from the game.

When we initially designed and implemented the auction house system, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But after much review and player feedback, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot.

We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the final shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process, but feel free to check out our blog post on the subject, and stay tuned to Diablo for further details.

Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

wow.. !

Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz About this sound listen  (RkReÜAÜG) (literally,Cattle marking and beef labeling supervision duties delegation law) was a law of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern of 1999, repealed in 2013. [1]
It dealt with the supervision of the labeling of beef.[2]
The name is an example of the virtually unlimited compounding of nouns that is possible in many Germanic languages. German orthography uses “closed” compounds, concatenating nouns to form one long word. This is unlike most English compounds, which are separated using spaces or hyphens.
Strictly speaking, it is made up of two words, because a hyphen at the end of a word is used to show that the word will end in the same way as the following. Consequently, the two words would be Rinderkennzeichnungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz andRindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz.
This is the official short title of the law; its full name is Gesetz zur Übertragung der Aufgaben für die Überwachung der Rinderkennzeichnung und Rindfleischetikettierung, corresponding to Law on delegation of duties for supervision of cattle marking and beef labeling. Most German laws have a short title consisting of a composite noun.
Words as long as this are nowhere near common in German. When the law was proposed in the state parliament, the members reacted with laughter and the responsible minister Till Backhaus apologized for the “possibly excessive length”.[citation needed] In 1999, the German Language Society nominated Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz for its Word of the Year award, but it lost to das Millennium, a German word that gained in usage at that time, complementing the German word for Millennium Jahrtausend.[3]
In 2003, a decree was established that modified some real estate-related regulations; its name was longer than the above law:Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung (long titleVerordnung zur Übertragung der Zuständigkeiten des Oberfinanzpräsidenten der Oberfinanzdirektion Berlin nach § 8 Satz 2 der Grundstücksverkehrsordnung auf das Bundesamt zur Regelung offener Vermögensfragen, GrundVZÜV), roughly Regulation on the delegation of authority concerning land conveyance permissions. At 67 letters, it surpassed the RkReÜAÜG, but was repealed in 2007.

Twigs of Yore - Blog: Don't judge a genealogist by their tree

hehe, another good read.

"I have seen at least a dozen Ancestry trees that show my grandfather married to the wrong woman. Right time, right place, right name, wrong parents. There are also many Ancestry trees that kill off my great-great-grandfather in his teens, well before he had any children.

From time to time I send off notes advising of the errors, or questioning the findings. These are mostly ignored. It really doesn't worry me - I know that I am here."

[1.6] FNI Photo Realism x256 UPDATED!! Minecraft Texture Pack

A beautiful texture pack. Only issue I've noticed is the compass does not point..

How to play Minecraft 1.6.2 with server and client on the same computer.

Steps to reduce rubberbanding (lag where blocks repop after being mined or Steve retakes the same steps again) in Minecraft version 1.6.2 while running the client on the same computer as the Minecraft server. This may work on other versions of Minecraft, but I have not tried them.

Summary: Changing the processor affinity is easy and seems to reduce the input lag and rubber-banding issues on this computer. The change is not permanent and in no way should it ever cause harm to the computer.
  1. Install the correct version of Java (32bit or 64bit). TIP: Match the OS you have installed.
  2. Install the recommended Minecraft server installer from
  3. Install the Minecraft client files (these should already be installed if you've been playing Minecraft!).
  4. Create a shortcut on your desktop to start the server. TIP: Try the shortcut "C:\Windows\System32\javaw.exe -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar C:\Minecraft\minecraftforge-universal-1.6.2- -server -XX:+AggressiveOpts"
  5. Create a shortcut on your desktop to launch the client. TIP: Set the profile options to "-Xmx1G -Xms1G -XX:+AggressiveOpts"
  6. Start the server.
  7. Using your favorite program (I use Task Manager), change the processor affinity on javaw.exe to 0. (Keep note of the PID).
  8. Launch the client.
  9. Using your favorite program (I use Task Manager), change the processor affinity on the second javaw.exe to 1.
Your results may vary.. Let me know!

[Update 9/19/2013] Removing the flags that the minecraft forum on Reddit said contradicted each other and did not help has reintroduced some weird block repopping side-effects. I'll have to add the flags back one at a time and do some more testing.

My Life as a Warrior Princess -

"...Xena, however, was also special. It was feminism at work, with female lead characters who were unapologetically powerful and sexy. During my time on the show, on six episodes from the fourth to the fifth seasons, I kicked butt. Off screen, I was trained in numerous fighting techniques, in archery and horseback riding. On screen, I hung with a Christ figure called Eli; I had a same-sex lover and a boyfriend of a different race than mine; I threw bombs and walked along high wires. I killed so many bad guys that they began to look the same. In fact, they were the same — 20 or so stunt men and women who did the most difficult tricks and falls, making the rest of us look good..."

ZenoCitium comments on This is happening in nearly every cell in your body, and at this speed.

DNA at its simplest is made out of molecules. Molecules are just clumps of atoms. For example a water molecule is made up out of one Oxygen atom and two Hydrogen atoms. DNA is a more complicated version of that example. DNA as a molecule is actually a collection of molecules. Four of them being Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine. The order in which these molecules are bonded to each other in the DNA molecule strand can be read as a genetic code, A T G or C.

To go into a bit more depth without [hopefully] sacrificing any readability.
A chromosome is a single strand of DNA, a single molecule.
DNA itself is a polymer [literally: poly-mer, many-parts] made up of monomers [mono-mer, one-part] called bases or nucleotides which include A, T, G and C for DNA. Any organism made up of DNA will have its entire structure encoded within those four base pairs. Organisms which use DNA include anything you'll actively interact with, though at the smaller scale things do change a fair bit.
The chain itself is made up of alternate phosphate and ribose links, with the base portion being attached to only the ribose portion.
There are a number of other types of organic polymers related to DNA which are used in your body every day. RNA is the most similar, it merely has a U instead of a T nucleotide and is single stranded.
There are also proteins which are directly encoded from DNA/RNA by way of Amino Acids. Amino Acids are a macro molecule, each of which is associated with at least one three base combination. So, when you have a strand of RNA being 'made into' a protein, you'll have a series of Amino Acids combine in a similar manner to the video here to create a single Protein.
Proteins are the real driving force of the body, they're the macromolecules which actually transcribe DNA. Certain types of Proteins are known as Enzymes. Each 'bit' attached to DNA in this video is a protein. Proteins work by doing specific things enabled by their physical structure. The exact structure is dictated by the electroweak force and thus, quantum physics!
There are other base pairs which have been created in the lab, it's unknown why we havn't seen these in nature much like a lot of abiogenisis [natural process by which life arises]. There is the study of un-natural life called Exobiology [exo- meaning 'outside of-'], which is a particularly awesome field, imo!

Facebook Feed Change Punishes Pages For Posting Crappy Memes | TechCrunch

Now, even more reasons to hate Facebook !

A man died and went to heaven.

As he stood in front of St. Peter at the Pearly Gates, he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him.
He asked, "What are all those clocks?"

St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on Earth has a Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock will move."

"Oh," said the man, "whose clock is that?"

"That is Mother Teresa's. The hands have never moved, indicating that she never told a lie."

"Incredible!" said the man.

"That's Abraham Lincoln's clock. The hands have moved twice, telling us that Abraham told only two lies in his entire life."

"Where's Obama's clock?"

"His clock is in Jesus's office. He's using it as a ceiling fan."

Hi there, everybody.

This is just a quick PSA to let everybody know that a recent exploit in servers has caused a bit of a storm on many servers - including our own beloved PMC Server. The issue affects CraftBukkit (and any implementations of it thereof) and vanilla servers - so no matter what server you are running, I recommend you read this post.

The exploit allowed them to log in as any user on the server, causing havoc and doing as they please. Luckily, due to the efforts of md_5, Dinnerbone and others, a patch was quickly devised and rolled out to many affected implementations.

PMC urges you to update your version of CraftBukkit/Spigot/etc to their latest safest development build.

For CraftBukkit, go here: build after #2864)
For Spigot, upgrade to at least version 1090

For information on how this all "started", the original Reddit thread is here:

Please note though that while this will close this hole, there may still be others, and I don't really want owners to think they are completely 100% safe from something like this ever happening again. Please take precautionary measures in protecting your moderator/administrator accounts on your own servers. Plugins such as SecuritySystem by Lord_Ralex of MinecraftForums ( will lock users by their IP and deny entry until another administrator can approve their IP change. There are many other similar systems on BukkitDev, but this is the one we're using on the PMC Server as of now.
